Jimmy's Homemade Cough Syrup

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!

What holiday season would be complete without half the family sick with the flu, a cold or a combination of both? The extremely warm winter we've been experiencing this year seems to have spurred on viruses and assorted other illnesses to the extreme.

Well, wouldn't you know it? About two weeks ago I jokingly said I was going to mix up some cough syrup for the cough I didn't yet have and lo and behold...the next day it hit me. A man I work with, Jimmy, had been telling me all about his homemade remedy that he swore was sure to cure any cough. After listening to the list of ingredients and realizing I had everything I needed to whip up a batch, I went home and mixed up a pint jar. Now, I will admit that it didn't cure my cough but it sure helped considerably. With sinus issues and a sore throat that would make a grown person cry on top of the cough, this homemade concoction did seem ease the worst coughing spells.

In a pint jar drop 15 soft peppermint balls (or 6 King Leo stick peppermint).
Add 2 tablespoons lemon juice.
Add 2 oz. honey. Leaving about 1/2" head space, fill the jar with smooth Canadian whiskey. (I used Canadian Hunter).Let the peppermint dissolve and gently shake every so often to mix ingredients thoroughly. You will end up with a  nice red syrup that will help calm a rough cough. WARNING: I only used it at night. I can only imagine the alcohol content that comes in over-the-counter cough syrup is worse, but I wasn't going to test that theory by driving with this stuff in my system.
